Artists have to be rebellious, irrational, brave enough to think out of the box. Season 2 of Netflix original documentary Abstract: The Art of Design introduces two artists who take nature as inspiration, follows how they transform the physical environment into incredible pieces of arts.
The first episode interviews celebrated artist Olafur Elliason, whose way of being interviewed already sets him apart: he starts a conversation with you right away. Five minutes later he picks up a mirror, letting you see the sets behind the camera lenses—all because his creative concept values the interaction between viewers and the piece; there’s only art if it resonates with you. He takes natural elements as themes and is extremely concerned about climate change. In his contemporary art, he uses exceptionally simplistic ways to represent natural elements like rainbows; fog; light and shadow; waterfall; glacier… Allowing viewers to experience the mysteries of nature.
The star of episode 2, Neri Oxman is a professor in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She leads her team to conduct unimaginable research in the MIT Media Lab. Neri’s teammate has said, “if you’re making something that’s applicable to the world today, here, you’re too late.” Therefore the Media Lab must flex their minds, designing products for 50-100 years later: how to design sustainable, degradable materials to completely replace construction materials like plastic and concrete? How to extract silk without killing silkworms, even allowing silkworm to directly construct? Why can’t glass be 3D-printed? The chitin in shells of crustaceans, pectin in the apple skin, 6500 live silkworms… The craziest ideas are all within Neri’s realm of possibility. How does she go from “nature-inspired design” to “design-inspired nature”? From Mother Nature to “Naturing”, will this become our future?
