Understanding Stroke

How do I Reduce my Risk of a Stroke?

According to numerous medical scientific research studies, several risk factors leading to stroke episodes have been well identified.

Things that you could do to lower your risk of a stroke includes:

  • Improving your diet – cut down on salt, cholesterol, sugar and red meat. Increase your fibre intake and take at least 5 portions of fruits and vegetables a day. Try adopting the ‘Mediterranean Diet’ – diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, fish and use of extra virgin olive oil. Apps such as ‘Foodswitch’ may help you make better choices when purchasing foods from the supermarket.

  • Stop smoking – the smoking cessation hotline in Hong Kong is 1833 183. Nicotine patches and gums may help you quit smoking.

  • Reduce your alcohol intake – whilst small amounts of alcohol may have beneficial effects, large amounts of alcohol intake is detrimental to the cardiovascular system and may result in high blood pressure.

  • Exercise regularly – ideally in the form of aerobic exercise, at least 3 times per week, 20-50 minutes each time.

  • Monitor your blood pressure – high blood pressure is one of the most common causes of strokes. Blood pressure can be monitored at home. Make sure to write down your blood pressure readings regularly and show them to your doctor.

  • Reduce your stress – try meditation and mindfulness.

  • Make sure you comply to your drug regimen – if you require regular medications, make sure you take them as instructed by your doctors.  Inform your doctor if you develop any side effects from the medications.
